My daughter Juwella, she is 9 years old. She is a good help in the kitchen. She can perform task already like washing dishes after breakfast on Saturdays. She also help in preparing food just like in this picture. She remove the “moringa” leaves from its twigs. We will cook our lunch. I want them to eat vegetable especially during weekend. Global Hand Washing is the simple yet efficient way to say "Bye, Bye Disease"

My daughter who is a 4th grader, their teacher asked them to make a poster on toothbrushing and handwashing in line with the world’s celebration Bright Smile, Bright Future .

Studies show that common reasons and drop-out among Filipino school children is tooth decay.

The latest National Oral Health Survey has revealed that 97 per cent of first-graders in public schools in the Philippines suffer from tooth decay.
The oral-health status of children in the Philippines is in an alarming state, and this is true for other countries in Asia as well. In the Philippines, caries amongst public school children remains completely untreated, leading to unnecessary pain and intra-oral infections. The National Oral Health Survey revealed that six-year-old children had on average nine decayed teeth in their mouth with 40 per cent of these teeth presenting caries with pulp involvement.

Twenty per cent of six-year-old children also reported toothache during the time of the survey and the condition is the main reason for school absenteeism in the Philippines. We have developed an index to measure the consequences of untreated caries—the PUFA index—which will be presented during the World Congress on Preventive Dentistry in Thailand. (by Daniel Zimmermann, DTI)

That is why the Department of Education through LGU and NGO’s worked hand in hand to eradicate or if not to decrease the rate of children with tooth decay by implementing “Bright Smile, Bright Future”. Free toothbrush and toothpaste were given to school children so teacher could let the kids do the correct toothbrushing in school especially for the children who can’t afford to buy toothbrush and toothpaste.

The NGO Fit for School supports the health and education sector in the Philippines in institutionalising an Essential Health Care Package for Filipino Children. This package implements daily hand-washing with soap and tooth-brushing with fluoride toothpaste, as well as biannual deworming, as an integrated part of the public school system.

Children are the main actors as they carry out the activities in the same organised manner, like the daily flag ceremony, under the leadership of classmates as group leaders. This daily routine in schools is familiarising children with healthy habits and may induce long-term behaviour change in family life.Children are performing daily tooth-brushing in school and we expect that this will lead to lifelong behaviour change. It is known that children are the best messengers and agents of change for promoting and introducing behaviour change in family life. Limited data is available to answer this question, but promising results from research conducted in Scotland amongst high-risk children showed long-lasting effects, evidenced by a reduction in caries increment of 39 per cent compared with control children four years after the termination of a school-based fluoride tooth-brushing programme. We are just starting a comprehensive research project to evaluate the programme in terms of health outcomes, academic performance and behaviour change.(by Daniel Zimmermann, DTI)

We hope that this project would really cater brightest future for our youth!

Who Am I?

Who Am I ?

Who am I? Can any body tell me who am I? Please tell me. You, You, you… do you know me? Ahhh! You are all foolish don’t you know me?

I am the daughter of the famous lawyer, Ronie Ismael and the popular social worker Margarita Reyes Ismael. Does that ring a bell now? Are you surprised? Surprise, why the daughter of these two well-known people is here? Looking like this? Do you want to know why?

We are two in the family. Jane, the pretty and the beautiful and me I am the ugly Susan.

Susan awkward your act, mommy snaps at me almost every time I move. Susan what’s that again? Naughty Susan, untidy Susan, Susan…… Ahhh!

I grew up and I got used to the idea of my inability. I went to an exclusive schools but school work was not for me. Mommy went in and out to explain my stupidity. Do I feel glad seeing her defeat? Will I glorify Mom’s bitterness? I didn’t know…..

But I had friends in my last school. This school was my choice my friends approved all my actions. They admire my dresses. They flocked around me. I gave them free snacks I had a lot of money. My friends introduced me to Rocky. Rocky said I was beautiful. That was the first time I feel appreciation so my heart lifted up. Rocky and I became good friends.

One day, he invited me to go with him to a party. I did not have second thought. He made me feel I am special. I don’t want to turn him down even if the only way is to sneak out from home.

That party is just a beginning of many parties with Rocky. But the last one is different. It was on a dark place with many teen-agers. There were smoke all around. Noise all over. I was not afraid because I was with Rocky. Then a friend came near and handed something to him. He held it in his arm and on one arm he made a shot. And told me to try mine. I was not hesitant to try anything just for him. So, I had my shot.

Little by little I feel I’m soaring higher and higher. There were lights blinking and dazzling. I am flying……goodbye Mommy, goodbye Jane…. I don’t need you. But after a while I heard gun shots, BANG! BANG!

I do not know what happened next. The only thing I learned was I am here, here in this place that nobody would love me, nobody would care for me, nobody would know me not even myself! God help me to know myself of WHO AM I?
